LUKE: Old Testament quotes in the New Testament

Of Matthew Mark and Luke, the book with the largest amount of information unique to itself is Luke – about 35% or 1/3 of the book of Luke is unique to Luke.  Luke is also the longest of the four gospels.

2 of the more popular parables by Yeshua are taught only in this book:

  1. The Good Samaritan  Luke 10:25-37
  2. The Prodigal Son  Luke 15:11-32

My purpose for doing these is to help people have a visual reference of Old Testament quotes in the New Testament. It is not to get into the debates on Markan priority or Q document hypothesis.

Luke 1:17 (CJB) 17 He will go out ahead of Adonai in the spirit and power of Eliyahu to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for Adonai a people prepared.”

Malachi 4:5-6 (CJB) 5 Look, I will send to you Eliyahu the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible Day of Adonai. 6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers; otherwise I will come and strike the land with complete destruction.”

[Look, I will send to you Eliyahu the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible Day of Adonai.]

Luke 1:46-48 (CJB) 46 Then Miryam said,

My soul magnifies Adonai; 47 and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior, 48 who has taken notice of his servant-girl in her humble position. For — imagine it! — from now on, all generations will call me blessed!

1 Samuel 1:11 (CJB) 11 Then she took a vow; she said, “Adonai-Tzva’ot, if you will notice how humiliated your servant is, if you will remember me and not forget your servant but will give your servant a male child, then I will give him to Adonai for as long as he lives; and no razor will ever come on his head.” 1 Samuel 2:1 (CJB) 1 Then Hannah prayed; she said: “My heart exults in Adonai! My dignity has been restored by Adonai! I can gloat over my enemies, because of my joy at your saving me.
Luke 1:49-50 (CJB) 49 “The Mighty One has done great things for me! Indeed, his name is holy; 50 and in every generation he has mercy on those who fear him.

Psalm 103:17 (CJB) 17 But the mercy of Adonai on those who fear him is from eternity past to eternity future, and his righteousness extends to his children’s children,

Psalm 111:9 (CJB) 9 He sent redemption to his people and decreed that his covenant should last forever. His name is holy and fearsome —

Luke 1:68 (CJB) 68 “Praised be Adonai, the God of Isra’el, because he has visited and made a ransom to liberate his people Psalm 41:13 (CJB) 13 Blessed be Adonai the God of Isra’el from eternity past to eternity future. Amen. Amen.

Psalm 72:18 (CJB) 18 Blessed be Adonai, God, the God of Isra’el, who alone works wonders.

Psalm 106:48 (CJB) 48 Blessed be Adonai, the God of Isra’el, from eternity past to eternity future. Now let all the people say, “Amen! Halleluyah!”

Luke 1:76 (CJB) 76 You, child, will be called a prophet of Ha‘Elyon; you will go before the Lord to prepare his way Malachi 3:1 (CJB) 1 “Look! I am sending my messenger to clear the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. Yes, the messenger of the covenant, in whom you take such delight — look! Here he comes,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot.

Isaiah 40:3 (CJB) 3 A voice cries out: “Clear a road through the desert for Adonai! Level a highway in the ‘Aravah for our God!

Luke 1:79 (CJB) 79 to shine on those in darkness, living in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the paths of peace.” Isaiah 9:2 (CJB) 2 The people living in darkness have seen a great light; upon those living in the land that lies in the shadow of death, light has dawned.
Luke 2:23 (CJB) 23 (as it is written in the Torah of Adonai, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to Adonai”) Exodus 13:2 (CJB) 2 “Set aside for me all the firstborn. Whatever is first from the womb among the people of Isra’el, both of humans and of animals, belongs to me.”

Exodus 13:12 (CJB) 12 you are to set apart for Adonai everything that is first from the womb. Every firstborn male animal will belong to Adonai.

Exodus 13:15 (CJB) 15 When Pharaoh was unwilling to let us go, Adonai killed all the firstborn males in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of humans and the firstborn of animals. This is why I sacrifice to Adonai any male that is first from the womb of an animal, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’

Luke 2:24 (CJB) 24 and also to offer a sacrifice of a pair of doves or two young pigeons, as required by the Torah of Adonai.

Leviticus 12:8 (CJB) 8 If she can’t afford a lamb, she is to take two doves or two young pigeons, the one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering; the cohen will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”

Luke 3:4-6 (CJB) 4 It was just as had been written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Yesha‘yahu,

The voice of someone crying out: ‘In the desert prepare the way for Adonai! Make straight paths for him! 5 Every valley must be filled in, every mountain and hill leveled off; the winding roads must be straightened and the rough ways made smooth. 6 Then all humanity will see God’s deliverance.’”

Isaiah 40:3-5 (CJB) 3 A voice cries out:

“Clear a road through the desert for Adonai! Level a highway in the ‘Aravah for our God! 4 Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill lowered, the bumpy places made level and the crags become a plain. 5 Then the glory of Adonai will be revealed; all humankind together will see it, for the mouth of Adonai has spoken.”

Luke 4:4 (CJB) 4 Yeshua answered him, “The Tanakh says, ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”

Deuteronomy 8:3 (CJB) 3 He humbled you, allowing you to become hungry, and then fed you with man, which neither you nor your ancestors had ever known, to make you understand that a person does not live on food alone but on everything that comes from the mouth of Adonai.
Luke 4:8 (CJB) 8 Yeshua answered him, “The Tanakh says, ‘Worship Adonai your God and serve him only.’” Deuteronomy 6:13-14 (CJB) 13 You are to fear Adonai your God, serve him and swear by his name. 14 You are not to follow other gods, chosen from the gods of the peoples around you;
Luke 4:10-11 (CJB) 10 For the Tanakh says,

He will order his angels to be responsible for you and to protect you. 11 They will support you with their hands, so that you will not hurt your feet on the stones.’”

Psalm 91:11-12 (CJB) 11 for he will order his angels to care for you and guard you wherever you go. 12 They will carry you in their hands, so that you won’t trip on a stone.
Luke 4:12 (CJB) 12 Yeshua answered him, “It also says, ‘Do not put Adonai your God to the test.’” Deuteronomy 6:16 (CJB)

16 Do not put Adonai your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah [testing].

Luke 4:18-19 (CJB) 18 “The Spirit of Adonai is upon me because he has anointed me to announce Good News to the poor; he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the imprisoned and renewed sight for the blind, to release those who have been crushed, 19 to proclaim a year of the favor of Adonai.” Isaiah 61:1-2 (CJB) 1 The Spirit of Adonai Elohim is upon me, because Adonai has anointed me to announce good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted; to proclaim freedom to the captives, to let out into light those bound in the dark; 2 to proclaim the year of the favor of Adonai and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn,

Isaiah 58:6 (CJB) 6 “Here is the sort of fast I want — releasing those unjustly bound, untying the thongs of the yoke, letting the oppressed go free, breaking every yoke,

Luke 7:15 (CJB) 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Yeshua gave him to his mother. 1 Kings 17:23 (CJB) 23 Eliyahu took the child, brought him down from the upstairs room into the house and gave him to his mother; and Eliyahu said, “See? Your son is alive.”
Luke 7:22 (CJB) 22 So he answered them by saying, “Go, tell Yochanan what you have been seeing and hearing: the blind are seeing again, the lame are walking, people with tzara‘at are being cleansed, the deaf are hearing, the dead are being raised, the Good News is being told to the poor — Isaiah 35:5-6 (CJB) 5 Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped; 6 then the lame man will leap like a deer, and the mute person’s tongue will sing. For in the desert, springs will burst forth, streams of water in the ‘Aravah;

Isaiah 26:19 (CJB) 19 Your dead will live, my corpse will rise; awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust; for your dew is like the morning dew, and the earth will bring the ghosts to life.

Isaiah 61:1 (CJB) 1 The Spirit of Adonai Elohim is upon me, because Adonai has anointed me to announce good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted; to proclaim freedom to the captives, to let out into light those bound in the dark;

Luke 7:27 (CJB) 27 This is the one about whom the Tanakh says,

See, I am sending out my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.’

Malachi 3:1 (CJB) 1 “Look! I am sending my messenger to clear the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. Yes, the messenger of the covenant, in whom you take such delight — look! Here he comes,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot.
Luke 8:10 (CJB) 10 and he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God; but the rest are taught in parables, so that they may look but not see, and listen but not understand. Isaiah 6:9 (CJB) 9 He said, “Go and tell this people:

‘Yes, you hear, but you don’t understand. You certainly see, but you don’t get the point!’

Luke 9:54 (CJB) 54 When the talmidim Ya‘akov and Yochanan saw this, they said, “Sir, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to destroy them?” 2 Kings 1:9-16 (CJB) 9 Then the king sent a commander of fifty to Eliyahu, together with his fifty men. Eliyahu was sitting at the top of a hill. The commander climbed up to him and said, “Man of God, the king says to come down.” 10 Eliyahu answered the commander of fifty, “If I am in fact a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and burn you up, along with your fifty men.” Fire came down from heaven, and it burned up him and his fifty men. 11 The king sent him another commander of fifty, together with his fifty men. He said to him, “Man of God, the king says, ‘Come down immediately!’” 12 Eliyahu answered them, “If I am in fact a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and burn you up, along with your fifty men.” Fire came down from heaven, and it burned up him and his fifty men. 13 The king sent a third commander of fifty, with his fifty men. The third commander of fifty climbed up, approached Eliyahu and fell on his knees before him. He pleaded with him: “Man of God, please! Have some regard for my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours! 14 I know that fire came down from heaven and burned up the two other commanders with their fifty men; but now, have some regard for my life.” 15 The angel of Adonai said to Eliyahu, “Go down with him; don’t be afraid of him.” So he got up and went down with him to the king. 16 Eliyahu said to the king, “Here is what Adonai says: ‘You sent messengers to consult Ba‘al-Z’vuv the god of ‘Ekron. Is it because there’s no God in Isra’el you can consult? Therefore, you will never leave the bed you are lying on; you will certainly die.’”
