A Dog returns to its VOMIT . . .

Kefa (Peter) wrote his second letter to believers, not UN-believers as some modern days doctrines – dogmas – false teachings suggest! Specifically, those with the same trust (faith) as he has:

2 Peter 1:1 (CJB)
1 … To: Those who, through the righteousness of our God

and of our Deliverer Yeshua the Messiah,

have been given the same kind of trust as ours:

He reminds them that when they presented the gospel of Yeshua to them, it was not based on stories and tall tales like many then and many now do. He reminds them that he saw Yeshua (Jesus) with his own eyes:

2 Peter 1:16 (CJB)
16  For when we made known to you

the power and the coming of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah,

we did not rely on cunningly contrived myths.

On the contrary, we saw his majesty with our own eyes.

He then reminds them that they are NOT to interpret prophecy in scripture individually:

2 Peter 1:20-21 (CJB)
20  First of all (above all), understand this:

no prophecy of Scripture is to be interpreted by an individual on his own;
21  for never has a prophecy come as a result of human willing —

on the contrary, people moved by the Ruach HaKodesh spoke a message from God.

He is writing people that are being tossed back and forth by false teachers – who are becoming double-minded – people that are starting to follow these false teachers – teachers that make up stories in their own minds and introduce heresies into the body. In chapter 2, he addresses these false teachers and their greed and love of money comparing it to Balaam’s, and gives us their purpose: to exploit new believers and those weak in knowledge of the text to follow THEIR truth instead of the truth Kefa (Peter) gave them through the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit).

By the time we get to the end of chapter 2, he has already exposed the false teacher for what he/she is:

An insulter of God (blasphemer) and a heretic that is on his way to hell

and trying to take as many as will follow him/her with them by making up

stories and dividing the body of believers from within the assemblies.

That is why this last part of Chapter 2 is so important to understand. The people that subscribe to the theological supposition (theory – dogma) of “Once Saved, Always Saved” will NOT like this following part:

2 Peter 2:20 (CJB)
20  Indeed, if they have once escaped the pollutions of the world

through knowing our Lord and Deliverer, Yeshua the Messiah,

and then have again become entangled and defeated by them,

their latter condition has become worse than their former.

What was their FORMER CONDITION?

The Rabbi Sha’ul (Paul) tells us very succinctly what the Former Condition was:

Ephesians 2:11-12 (CJB)
11  Therefore, remember your former state:

you Gentiles by birth —

called the Uncircumcised by those who,

merely because of an operation on their flesh, are called the Circumcised —
12  at that time had no Messiah.

You were estranged from the national life of Isra’el.

You were foreigners to the covenants embodying God’s promise.

You were in this world without hope and without God.

Let’s go back to the beginning of Kefa’s (Peter’s) 2nd letter so that we make no mistake:

2 Peter 1:1 (CJB)
1 … To: Those who, through the righteousness of our God

and of our Deliverer Yeshua the Messiah,

have been given the same kind of trust as ours:

Without hope and without God became given the same kind of trust as ours.

Kefa’s statement destroys the modern day doctrine of “Once Saved Always Saved” before it was ever conceived by Augustine, and later further developed and promoted by, Calvin!

It does this because it states that if those that have been given the same kind of trust as ours, those that have once ESCAPED the pollutions (UNCLEANNESS: defilement, corruption) of this world, and again become entangled and defeated by this uncleanness through the pursuit of (human standards: worldliness) instead of (godly standards: Holiness), PAY ATTENTION now:

their latter condition has become worse than their former.

In other words, the condition of these believers NOW:

(have been given the same kind of trust as ours)

is WORSE than the condition THEY had BEFORE they were believers:

(without hope and without God . . .)

Being in a condition that is WORSE than being

without hope and without God is still saved, right?!?

Do I hear crickets?

Brothers and Sisters, I implore you to put your doctrines of men away – if only for a few minutes. This is so important! If you don’t, you will rationalize (attempt to make the unreasonable sound reasonable) your man-made doctrines over the Living Word of God that refutes them! I implore you to pray and let the Holy Spirit guide you so that you are not deceived and snared by the very people Kefa (Peter) is warning us about! Kefa (Peter) isn’t done . . . Let’s continue:

2 Peter 2:21 (CJB)
21  It would have been better for them

not to have known the Way of righteousness

than, fully knowing,

to turn from the holy command delivered to them.

In other words, it would be better for them if they had remained unbelievers who were without hope and without God, than to become believers that fully knew the WAY of righteousness and THEN turned away – apostatized.

The writer of Hebrews says it best when he states:

Hebrews 6:4-8 (CJB)
4  For when people have once been enlightened,

tasted the heavenly gift,

become sharers in the Ruach HaKodesh,
5  and tasted the goodness of God’s Word and the powers of the ‘olam haba
6  and then have fallen away

it is impossible to renew them

so that they turn from their sin,

as long as for themselves

they keep executing the Son of God on the stake all over again

and keep holding him up to public contempt.
7  For the land that soaks up frequent rains

and then brings forth a crop useful to its owners

receives a blessing from God;
8  but if it keeps producing thorns and thistles,

it fails the test

and is close to being cursed;

in the end, it will be burned.

It would be better for people that have escaped the uncleanliness and pollution of their former life and condition (worldliness which is concerned with man-made standards) and become sharers in the Holy Spirit – a former life and condition that was without hope and without God – than to become a believer that willingly turns back to and becomes entangled and defeated by the very thing they once escaped from. If they choose to go back to their worldly life and pursue that instead of pursuing holiness, they re-crucify Messiah all over.

Impossible to renew them – Aren’t all things possible with God?

I’ll make it simple . . . If His son is not enough for you, He isn’t going to send you a second one or a third one. He has given you all you need in the sacrifice of His only unique son.

John 3:16 (CJB)
16  “For God so loved the world

that he gave his only and unique Son,

so that everyone who trusts in him

may have eternal life,

instead of being utterly destroyed.

Again, have been given the same kind of trust as ours:

contrast this again with verse 20:

2 Peter 2:20 (CJB)
20  Indeed, if they have once escaped the pollutions of the world

through knowing our Lord and Deliverer, Yeshua the Messiah,

and then have again become entangled and defeated by them,

their latter condition has become worse than their former.

We are told that fools repeat the same mistakes over and over:

Proverbs 26:11 (CJB)
11  Just as a dog returns to his vomit,

 a fool repeats his folly.

This is how Kefa drives his final point home. He uses the above verse in the TaNaKh:

2 Peter 2:22 (CJB)
22  What has happened to them accords with the true proverb,

A dog returns to its own vomit.”

Yes,

“The pig washed itself, only to wallow in the mud!”

Notice what Dr David Stern writes:

“The pig washed itself, only to wallow in the mud!” This must be a proverb familiar to Kefa’s readers. Compare the Jewish expression, “to enter the mikveh while [still] touching the corpse.” Though the ritual bath can cleanse ceremonial impurity, immersion is ineffective if one continues holding onto the source of the defilement.

David H. Stern, Jewish New Testament Commentary, (Clarksville, Maryland: Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc., 1992), WORDsearch CROSS e-book, 761.

Kefa’s teaching is straightforward, simple and very sobering. When you combine it with what the writer of Hebrews wrote and what Sha’ul (Paul) wrote, the picture is crystal clear:

Pursue a life of Holiness – pursue the godly standard! If you willingly follow false teachers, there is a very good chance that you won’t pursue the godly standard which is Holiness and instead will return to the life you escaped, where you were without hope and without God, and if you do, your condition will be WORSE now than it was before you were an unbeliever that was without Hope and without God. If by your choices, you are re-crucifying Jesus (Yeshua) all over again and holding him up to public contempt all over again, you are close to being cursed, and if you continue down this path, you will fail the test. If you fail the test, you will go to hell and be destroyed whether you believe in the man-made doctrine and get-out-of-jail-free card of “once saved, always saved” or not.

If you don’t learn the text, apply it to your life, and persevere to follow God’s commands – specifically the command to be Holy because He is Holy,

You WILL be led astray by the tricksters with their stories and cunningly contrived myths within the assemblies.

You will turn from the TRUE WAY and follow your OLD ways . . .

Like a dog, you too will again repeat your folly and return to your own vomit . . .
