MARK: Old Testament quotes in the New Testament

It is hard sometime to find specific tools to help you study – in the way that you want to study.

One of the things I looked for and had a hard time finding was a side-by-side comparison of the Older Covenants mentioned in the Newer Covenant (Old Testament/New Testament or Tanakh in the Brit Chadasha).

Sure, you can find some charts with verses numbers listed, but you have to check every one individually because few spell out the entire verse.  Unless you have memorized all of the verses, it is very time consuming to check each reference.  Many of these charts have mistakes and insertions that don’t line up or just plain aren’t in the text – the problem is since they only list the verse, you can spend considerable time checking each reference.  If they had just listed the verse in its entirety, you could verify visually quickly.

In frusteration, I decided to do my own and share them with you.  I give the entire verse so that it can be a resource that you can check both visually and quickly.  If I have missed one, feel free to comment.  Please give both the verse in the Brit Chadasha (New Testament) and the verse in the Tanakh (Old Testament).

The first one of these I did was on Matthew entitled “But it ALSO says . . . “https://evenifministries.wordpress.com/2012/11/01/but-it-also-says/

It is listed in the “Verses” folder to the right and as I do more I will also list them there https://evenifministries.wordpress.com/category/verses/

The following is the Gospel of Mark

Mark 1:2 (CJB) 2 It is written in the prophet Yesha‘yahu,“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare the way before you.” Malachi 3:1 (CJB) 1 “Look! I am sending my messenger to clear the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. Yes, the messenger of the covenant, in whom you take such delight — look! Here he comes,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot.
Mark 1:3 (CJB) 3 “The voice of someone crying out: ‘In the desert prepare the way for Adonai! Make straight paths for him!’” Isaiah 40:3 (CJB) 3 A voice cries out: “Clear a road through the desert for Adonai! Level a highway in the ‘Aravah for our God!
Mark 4:12 (CJB) 12 so thatthey may be always looking but never seeing; always listening but never understanding. Otherwise, they might turn and be forgiven!” Isaiah 6:9-10 (CJB) 9 He said, “Go and tell this people: ‘Yes, you hear, but you don’t understand. You certainly see, but you don’t get the point!’ 10 “Make the heart of this people [sluggish with] fat, stop up their ears, and shut their eyes. Otherwise, seeing with their eyes, and hearing with their ears, then understanding with their hearts, they might repent and be healed!”
Mark 7:6-7 (CJB) 6 Yeshua answered them, “Yesha‘yahu was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites — as it is written,‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from me. 7 Their worship of me is useless, because they teach man-made rules as if they were doctrines.’ Isaiah 29:13 (CJB) 13 Then Adonaisaid:“Because these people approach me with empty words, and the honor they bestow on me is mere lip-service; while in fact they have distanced their hearts from me, and their ‘fear of me’ is just a mitzvah of human origin —
Mark 7:10 (CJB) 10 For Moshe said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ Exodus 20:12 (CJB) 12 ה‎ 12 “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your God is giving you.

For their worm will never die, and their fire will never be quenched; but they will be abhorrent to all humanity.”[“Every month on Rosh-Hodesh and every week on Shabbat, everyone living will come to worship in my presence,” says Adonai.]
Mark 10:4 (CJB) 4 They said, “Moshe allowed a man to hand his wife a getand divorce her.” Deuteronomy 24:1 (CJB)1 “Suppose a man marries a woman and consummates the marriage but later finds her displeasing, because he has found her offensive in some respect. He writes her a divorce document, gives it to her and sends her away from his house.

Deuteronomy 24:3 (CJB)

3 but the second husband dislikes her and writes her a get, gives it to her and sends her away from his house; or the second husband whom she married dies.

Mark 10:6 (CJB) 6 However, at the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. Genesis 1:27 (CJB) 27 So God created humankind in his own image; in the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.

Genesis 5:2 (CJB)

2 he created them male and female; he blessed them and called them Adam [humankind, man] on the day they were created.

Mark 10:7-8 (CJB) 7 For this reason, a man should leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, 8 and the two are to become one flesh. Thus they are no longer two, but one. Genesis 2:24 (CJB) 24 This is why a man is to leave his father and mother and stick with his wife, and they are to be one flesh.
Mark 10:19 (CJB) 19 You know the mitzvot‘Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t give false testimony, don’t defraud, honor your father and mother,…’” Exodus 20:12-13 (CJB) 12 ה‎ 12 “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your God is giving you.13 ו‎ 13 “Do not murder.

Deuteronomy 5:16-17 (CJB) 16 ה‎ 16 “‘Honor your father and mother, as Adonai your God ordered you to do, so that you will live long and have things go well with you in the land Adonai your God is giving you.

17 ו‎ 17 “‘Do not murder.

Mark 10:34 (CJB) 34 who will jeer at him, spit on him, beat him and kill him; but after three days, he will rise.” Isaiah 50:6 (CJB) 6 I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who plucked out my beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting.Hosea 6:2 (CJB) 2 After two days, he will revive us; on the third day, he will raise us up; and we will live in his presence.
Mark 11:9 (CJB) 9 Those who were ahead and those behind shouted,“Please! Deliver us!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of Adonai!” Psalm 118:25-26 (CJB) 25 Please, Adonai! Save us! Please, Adonai! Rescue us! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of Adonai. We bless you from the house of Adonai.
Mark 11:17 (CJB) 17 Then, as he taught them, he said, “Isn’t it written in the Tanakh, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the Goyim.’ But you have made it into a den of robbers!” Jeremiah 7:11 (CJB)11 Do you regard this house, which bears my name, as a cave for bandits? I can see for myself what’s going on,” says Adonai.
Mark 12:10-11 (CJB) 10 Haven’t you read the passage in the Tanakhthat says,‘The very rock which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone! 11 This has come from Adonai, and in our eyes it is amazing’?” Psalm 118:22-23 (CJB) 22 The very rock that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone! 23 This has come from Adonai, and in our eyes it is amazing.
Mark 12:19 (CJB) 19 “Rabbi, Moshe wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and have children to preserve the man’s family line. Deuteronomy 25:5-6 (CJB) 5 “If brothers live together, and one of them dies childless, his widow is not to marry someone unrelated to him; her husband’s brother is to go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her. 6 The first child she bears will succeed to the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be eliminated from Isra’el.
Mark 12:26 (CJB) 26 And as for the dead being raised, haven’t you read in the book of Moshe, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov’? Exodus 3:6 (CJB) 6 I am the God of your father,” he continued, “the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov.” Moshe covered his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
Mark 12:29-30 (CJB) 29 Yeshua answered, “The most important is,‘Sh’ma Yisra’el, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, O Isra’el, the LORD our God, the LORD is one], 30 and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your understanding and with all your strength.’ Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (CJB) 4 (A:vi, S: v) “Sh’ma, Yisra’el! Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, Isra’el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one]; 5 and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources.
Mark 12:31 (CJB) 31 The second is this:‘You are to love your neighbor as yourself.’

There is no other mitzvah greater than these.”

Leviticus 19:18 (CJB) 18 Don’t take vengeance on or bear a grudge against any of your people; rather, love your neighbor as yourself; I am Adonai.
Mark 12:36 (CJB) 36 David himself, inspired by the Ruach HaKodesh, said,‘Adonai said to my Lord, “Sit here at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ Psalm 110:1 (CJB) 1 Adonai says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Mark 13:14 (CJB) 14 “Now when you see the abomination that causes devastation standing where it ought not to be” (let the reader understand the allusion), “that will be the time for those in Y’hudah to escape to the hills. Daniel 9:27 (CJB) 27 He will make a strong covenant with leaders for one week [of years]. For half of the week he will put a stop to the sacrifice and the grain offering. On the wing of detestable things the desolator will come and continue until the already decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator.”

Daniel 11:31 (CJB)

31 Armed forces will come at his order and profane the sanctuary and fortress. They will abolish the daily burnt offering and set up the abomination that causes desolation.

Daniel 12:11 (CJB)

11 From the time the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.

Mark 13:19 (CJB) 19 For there will be worse trouble at that time than there has ever been from the very beginning, when God created the universe, until now; and there will be nothing like it again. Joel 2:2 (CJB) 2 a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick fog; a great and mighty horde is spreading like blackness over the mountains. There has never been anything like it, nor will there ever be again, not even after the years of many generations.

Daniel 12:1 (CJB)

1 “When that time comes, Mikha’el, the great prince who champions your people, will stand up; and there will be a time of distress unparalleled between the time they became a nation and that moment. At that time, your people will be delivered, everyone whose name is found written in the book.

Mark 13:24-25 (CJB) 24 In those days, after that trouble, the sun will grow dark, the moon will stop shining, 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in heaven will be shaken. Isaiah 13:10 (CJB) 10 For the stars, the constellations in the sky, will no longer give their light; the sun will be dark when it rises; and the moon will no longer shine.

Isaiah 34:4 (CJB)

4 The whole host of heaven will decompose, the heavens themselves be rolled up like a scroll; all their array will wither away like a withering grape-leaf that falls from a vine or a withered fig from a fig tree.

Ezekiel 32:7 (CJB)

7 When I extinguish you, I will cover the sky and make its stars black; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light.

Joel 2:10 (CJB)

10 At their advance the earth quakes, and the sky shakes, the sun and moon turn black, and the stars stop shining.

Joel 2:31 (CJB)

31 The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and terrible Day of Adonai.”

Joel 3:15 (CJB)

15 The sun and moon have grown black, and the stars have stopped shining.

Haggai 2:6 (CJB)

6 For this is what Adonai-Tzva’ot says: “It won’t be long before one more time I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land;

Haggai 2:21 (CJB)

21 “Tell Z’rubavel, governor of Y’hudah, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth,

Mark 13:26 (CJB) 26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with tremendous power and glory. Daniel 7:13-14 (CJB) 13 “I kept watching the night visions, when I saw, coming with the clouds of heaven, someone like a son of man. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. 14 To him was given rulership, glory and a kingdom, so that all peoples, nations and languages should serve him. His rulership is an eternal rulership that will not pass away; and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Mark 14:27 (CJB) 27 Yeshua said to them, “You will all lose faith in me, for the Tanakhsays,‘I will strike the shepherd dead, and the sheep will be scattered.’ Zechariah 13:7 (CJB) 7 “Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the young ones.
Mark 14:62 (CJB) 62 “I AM,” answered Yeshua. “Moreover, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of HaG’vurah and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Daniel 7:13 (CJB) 13 “I kept watching the night visions, when I saw, coming with the clouds of heaven, someone like a son of man. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence.

Psalm 110:1 (CJB)

1 Adonai says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”

Mark 15:34 (CJB) 34 At three, he uttered a loud cry,“Elohi! Elohi! L’mah sh’vaktani?”

(which means, “My God! My God! Why have you deserted me?”)

Psalm 22:1 (CJB) 1 My God! My God! Why have you abandoned me? Why so far from helping me, so far from my anguished cries?
Mark 15:36 (CJB) 36 One ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar, put it on a stick and gave it to him to drink. “Wait!” he said, “Let’s see if Eliyahu will come and take him down.” Psalm 69:21 (CJB) 21 They put poison in my food; in my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.
Mark 16:19 (CJB) 19 So then, after he had spoken to them, the Lord Yeshua was taken up into heaven and sat at the right hand of God. Psalm 110:1 (CJB) 1 Adonai says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”

Dani'el 3:17-18 (CJB) 17 Your majesty, if our God, whom we serve, is able to save us, he will save us from the blazing hot furnace and from your power. 18 But even if he doesn’t, we want you to know, your majesty, that we will neither serve your gods nor worship the gold statue which you have set up.”

    Bill,

I came across this page while doing some research on Mark’s use of the OT. You’ve done a lot of the work for me. Thanks. FYI The World English Bible cites Job 9:8 as a source for Mark 6:48. You may have already rejected it, but if not you might want to consider adding that, although it’s not a direct quote.

    • Thanks David – Most of the work was done by David Stern and I just made a visual representation to help those that study such as yourself and myself so that we could see it side by side – I did however buy the COMMENTARY on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament by GK Beale and DA Carson recently – – I hope to clean them up a little over time. Be blessed!

        Bill,

Thanks for the citation to Beale and Carson. It looks like a book I could use also. I should have mentioned before that I think that at Mark 16:8 where he says that the women fled from the tomb “for they were afraid” (ἐφοβήθη γαρ in Greek) is a quote from Gen 18:15 of the LXX where Sarah said nothing “for she was afraid.”

Great resource! Thought you might like to know about another parallel in Mark 11:17:

    Mark 11:17 (ESV)
And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

    Isaiah 56:7 (ESV)
these I will bring to my holy mountain,
    and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
    will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
    for all peoples.”

  7. David Dunning says:

This is a fantastic resource: I have a Good Friday service to run and thought I would look at the way Mark follows either literally by quotation or inference the OT especially Isaiah 53 which seems to be in Jesus` mind as he is living out his mission: certainly Ps 22 is there at his dying moments, as you point out. Thanks for all this help

    David
